International Poster Biennale in Mexico – review of awarded works

The special guest of the 7th edition of the Poznań Art Week 2023 festival: “Locally” was Xavier Bermudez, director of the International Poster Biennale in Mexico. One of the elements of his visit was the presentation of works awarded at previous editions of the cultural event he hosted. In 2022, the BCIM was held for the 17th time, which gives a total of 34 years of history. During this time, the Biennale changed significantly. It is one of the oldest poster competitions in the world and a pioneering event of its kind in the Americas.
The first edition took place in 1990, and in 2011 a civic association of the same name was established, which organizes the competition to this day. Thus, its director, Xavier Bermudez, with his 34 years of uninterrupted experience, plays – as he calls himself – the role of an agent or ambassador of the poster, accumulating and compiling its history, promoting its social value and applied design. The Biennale itself, in accordance with its idea, is a platform for exchange between artists and related projects.
On the occasion of the 17th edition of the Biennale, over 5,700 works from 72 countries were sent, of which an international jury selected 412 posters for the final exhibition.
Mateusz Bieczyński, organizational director of the Poznań Art Week festival, was present at the Mexican event. In the main panel, he gave a lecture on the work of Wiktor Górka, a leading representative of the so-called of the Polish School of Posters, who was associated with Mexico for over 30 years and played a certain role as an instigator of the Mexican Biennale.
On the occasion of the arrival of Xavier Bermudez to Poznań and his active participation in the program of the Poznań Art Week, the director of the Mexican Biennale prepared a selection of posters awarded in previous editions of the competition for the Polish audience.
