The exhibition Interspaces by Katarzyna Koczyńska-Kielan
is a multi-layered narrative about form, culture, and experience. The ceramic works presented at the Nowa Gallery UAP – many of them created during the artist’s residencies in Jingdezhen and Longquan, China – are the result of not only technical mastery but also bold experimentation with traditional celadon porcelain, shifting it from its utilitarian context into the realm of sculpture and artistic form.
The exhibition title opens the door to multiple interpretations. Interspaces refers both to the physical zones shaped between the interior and exterior of a ceramic object and to metaphorical fields – between matter and idea, past and present, East and West. The objects on display explore the thresholds where form ceases to serve function and begins to convey meaning. Interpenetrating voids and volumes, openings and enclosures, guide the viewer through subtle tensions embedded in space and in the material itself.
This exhibition also stands as a testament to artistic consistency and courage. Katarzyna Koczyńska-Kielan has long pursued new approaches in the field of ceramics, treating it not as a utilitarian medium but as a fully valid artistic language. Her works – organic, concentrated, and delicate – grow from a deep dialogue with tradition, not as homage, but as transformation and reinterpretation. Her Chinese inspirations are not mere citations but become material filtered through the artist’s sensitivity and embedded in her personal creative idiom.
Interspaces is also a journey through different stages of her creative career – the exhibition brings together works from various periods, revealing a continuity of exploration and constant transformation of her practice. It is a space where time, matter, and gesture converge. A space where viewers, wandering among the forms, can experience silence, focus, and a deep, nearly meditative encounter with art.
Katarzyna Koczyńska-Kielan – visual artist and professor, affiliated with the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Art and Design in Wrocław, where she leads her own ceramic studio and mentors new generations of artists. She specializes in ceramic sculpture; her practice, oscillating between organic geometry and discursive abstraction, creates emotional tension between form and space. She has held over 25 solo exhibitions and participated in more than 140 group shows in Poland and abroad. She has twice undertaken residencies in China, creating sculptural, non-utilitarian works in traditional celadon porcelain. Her objects are part of collections in the National Museums in Wrocław and Poznań, as well as in international collections. She is a recipient of numerous awards, including the Minister of Culture and National Heritage Award for Educational Activity (2024) and the Silver Cross of Merit (2019).
